The icons aren't symmetrical... although + and - are (of course) symmetrical, the icons also have a horizontal line (I think they are called grid lines) that either extend to the right or to the left depending on BIDI mode.
The only way to consolidate them is to get rid of grid lines altogether.

This has been done for the new claro theme, not worth fixing other themes.

I thought maybe we could remove the Tree icons and some of the rtl tree css for tundra, but the other themes seem to use sprites which combine the icons and the connector lines. Is it just that Tundra hasn't been converted over to use the sprites? Should we just make this a wontfix?
