#16775 closed enhancement (patchwelcome)

Enhance chart labels for stacked charts

Reported by: Naris Owned by: cjolif
Priority: undecided Milestone: 1.13
Component: Charting Version: 1.9.0a2

The 1.9.0 alpha adds support for all chart types, such as column, bar, etc.

However, currently it doesn't work well with stacked plots (StackedColumns?, StackedBars?, etc.) when there are several series stacked on top of each other.

Currently, it will only display the values of each "section" of each column/bar either inside or on top of said section. If the "sections" are small, it results in overlaid, unreadable blocks of text. It would be helpful in these situations to allow the labels to placed either on the right, or left, or alternating sides instead.

Also, what would be *really* helpful would be to have the option to display the sum total value of all the "sections" in the columns/bars above the columns/bars. It would also be helpful in that case to be able to turn off the individual labels for each section of the column/bar.

I have attached an example image of a chart using StackedColumns? using dojo 1.9.0a2 charting with labels as an example. What I really need is to be able to specify to display total values above he columns instead of each individual section's amoun inside the columns.

Displaying the sum makes sense and can probably added easily. For the overlaying problem it is probably more difficult which alternate layout would you suggest?

By alternate layout, I meant allowing an option to place the labels on alternating sides -- right side, left side, etc. to allow more labels in less vertical space without overlapping.

So you would be able to specify if the labels should be inside, outside (on top), outside (on the right), outside (on the left) or outside (on both sides alternating between right and left) for vertical columns.

For horizontal bar charts it would be flipped 90 degress so it would be inside, outside (to the right), outside (above), outside (below) or outside (on both sides alternating between above and below).

Milestone: tbd2.0

thanks for the suggestions. Feel free to contribute a patch as well. 1.9 being a couple of week ahead of us, I suppose this will be more a 2.0 thing.
