Description

(severity set to major, as this issue is a "barrier to entry" which can reduce adoption)

http://dojotoolkit.org/

The impression this page gives me is "huge". It made me think "maybe I should go for something more lightweight, e.g. jquery". Because I had a good feeling whilst reading about the Dojo Foundation, I looked further. And I saw the dojo core is lightweight.

The suggestion is, to place a good visible "Lightweight Dojo Base, only 31kb" in the upper section of the page. Although I personally prefer the term "Core".

Next, the current order of the modules (in the lower section of the page):

Grids and charts Powerful Base API's Desktop, Mobile, Embedded
Rich UI Widgets Open Source Need Help?

This should be possibly this way:

Lightweight Base API's Rich UI Widgets Grids and charts
Desktop, Mobile, Embedded Open Source Need Help?

In any case: the dojo-base should be the first entry. Or possibly it could move into the uppers section (there's space left in the right). Then the lower section would become like this.

Rich UI Widgets Grids and charts Desktop, Mobile, Embedded
Open Source Why Dojo? Need Help?

The "Why Dojo?" section would talk in a fair-play manner about the reasons to choose Dojo, e.g.:

  • High amount of active development
  • Written applications are truly portable accross many devices and platforms
  • ...

With "fair-play" I mean: the document states openly when to not choose dojo.

I hope all this can be of help for you.

Just noticed that a "why dojo" exists (somehow "hidden") in the "Reference Guide":

Resolution: fixed

the current version of the website emphasizes dojo's "New lightweight kernel".

closing this ticket as fixed.

The information should be visible on the first hit, first tab. It's currently not. A simple addition would solve this:

Current:

"From simple websites to large packaged enterprise applications whether desktop or mobile, Dojo will meet your needs".

Change to:

"From simple websites to large packaged enterprise applications whether desktop or mobile, Dojo will meet your needs, starting with a 3.8kB "nano-core" ".

Milestone: 1.7

Actually it does say that already. Just wait a few seconds and that text will fade in.

Not any person stays a few seconds. But please let's not start the "justification battles".

It's really a shame if you don't realize:

"starting with a 3.8kB "nano-core"" (or similar) is one of the most important information. It belongs to the main page, first hit.

You don't need to be an marketing expert to realize that.
